Even though it may be difficult to grow because of its need for certain host plants the seeds are available through various wildflower nurseries. The moving around does not stop there as the genus Castilleja has recently been transferred with other hemiparasitic members of the family Scrophulariaceae into the family Orobanchaceae. The genus Castilleja was named for Domingo Castillejo, Spanish botanist and Professor of Botany in Cadiz, Spain, in 1782 by Jose Celestino Mutis in Linnaeus' son's book Supplementum Plantarum. It was later transferred to the genus Euchroma in 1818 and finally to the genus Castilleja in 1825. Castilleja coccinea was first described as a new species in 1737 by Linnaeus who placed it in the genus Bartsia. ![]() With all that said, the only way for Pam to turn things around is if she confronts her issues head-on, instead of burying them in alcohol. It’s just that her actions don’t translate. While this doesn’t excuse her treatment of her daughter, it does show that Pam’s heart is in the right place. She also comments that she’s happy Penny is smarter than her and that she wishes Penny to have a good life. She has lines where she tells the player to treat Penny kindly because she’s the only one Pam has left, especially after the player marries Penny. It's also clear that Pam does care about Penny. The game even allows them to build her a new house to replace the old trailer. But look at me now.” It suggests that Pam thinks it’s too late for her to improve her life, though this isn’t the case as Stardew Valley allows the player to get Pam her job as a bus driver to Calico Desert back. She looks down on herself as evidenced by her dialogue lines, such as, “I had hopes and dreams like you, once. Pam sends them on their way before telling Penny not to let others clean up her house because it’s embarrassing.ĭespite her usual nonchalance, Pam isn’t happy with how things are. The two then stop, realizing that the player is still in the trailer with them. Pam then retorts that Penny is being ungrateful because it was her who put a roof over Penny’s head. The situation then escalates to a full-blown argument where Penny notices that Pam has been drinking again and accuses her of being selfish. In the middle of cleaning, Pam will enter the trailer and explode at Penny, telling her that she already had everything the way she liked it. The player will then offer to help her, to which, Penny happily accepts. Should the player enter the trailer while Penny is there, she’ll apologize for the mess and explain that she’s about to clean up. The player can experience this firsthand in Penny’s Four-Heart Event. This reliance on alcohol has a negative effect on Pam’s relationship with her daughter. Luckily, the player can get Pam to pay her tab by choosing the right dialogue option during the event. This is mostly because Pam isn’t paying for her drinks, but Gus is too afraid to confront her because he sees her as a friend. If the Stardew Valley player befriends Gus, he will admit in his Four-Heart event that the saloon is struggling financially. Pam drinks so often, in fact, that it’s affecting Gus’ business. After that, she heads straight to the saloon, as usual. The only deviation to this occurs on Spring 25, when she goes to the clinic for her annual checkup. She leaves her trailer to go to work - whether it’s at Joja Mart or the bus stop - then heads to the saloon to drink until midnight. Pam has one of the most straightforward NPC schedules in Stardew Valley. When I am absolutely stumped by a little black bee that does not exhibit any of the distinguishing traits of other little black bee species (facial markings, elongated abdomen, etc.), my default guess is usually Lasioglossum (although this is definitely not my preferred mode of bee identification!). Lasioglossum are likely the most frequently encountered small black bees in the city. Although Lasioglossum species can differ greatly in appearance, those that are most commonly found in our region tend to sport metallic black bodies and a distinctive head shape in which the wider back of the head narrows toward the mandibles. This group of little black bees is by far one of the most diverse genera, with species still being discovered. B: Thick layer of pale hairs on underside of abdomen (photo by Phil Savoie). This is characteristic of many other bees in the Megachilidae family of which Chelostoma species are a part. Most species have a thick layer of pale hairs on the underside of their abdomen (scopa), used for collecting pollen. Chelostoma beesĬhelostoma species can be distinguished by their narrow and elongated abdomen and thorax. Many species are also characterized by “thick” heads in which there is much space behind the two compound eyes of the bee. All species found in our region sport prominent white stripes along their abdomen. Furrow bees ( Halictus species)įurrow bee species generally represent the large end of the little black bee size spectrum. C: The appearance of facial markings can vary across different Ceratina species. B: Small yellow marking in the centre of the face. AĪ: Sides of abdomen are relatively parallel before tapering to a point. Note: The large toonie-sized bees also known as “carpenter bees” ( Xylocopa species) are in the same family as small carpenter bees, but are not found as far north as Ottawa. Their overall wider and shinier body, as well as the ridges along the body of carpenter bees, also help to set them apart from yellow-masked bees. Individuals of this genus also often have yellow markings on their faces however, unlike those of yellow-masked bees, they are typically much less conspicuous and show up only as a single small spot in the centre of the bee’s face. Female small carpenter bees have a unique abdominal shape, with the sides of the abdomen relatively parallel before coming together in a point. Named for their habit of nesting in old wood (e.g., stems of dead and broken twigs), small carpenter bees typically look black in the field, but a closer look can reveal their lighter metallic blue colour (sometimes greenish). AĪ & B: Female Hylaeus annulatus with yellow markings along the face (photo B from Discover Life). Females of this genus transport pollen by ingesting it directly off the flower and regurgitating it out for the young in their nests. However, yellow-masked bees are practically hairless. Most species in this genus sport yellow (sometimes white) markings on their face and legs – a characteristic not seen in most other bees encountered in our region (but see “Small carpenter bees” below).įemale bees of other species generally transport pollen by carrying it on the many hairs along their bodies. Look out for these small, sleek, yellow and black bees. But if one is patient enough to get a good look at one, there are a couple of general characteristics that may be helpful for identifying these bees at least to genus. The size and often superficially wasp-like characteristics of little black bees make them even more difficult to identify. Who are those “little black bees”? Identifying bees to species on the fly can be difficult, as the traits that differentiate them are typically indistinguishable unless the bee is euthanized and inspected under a microscope. When I was first learning to identify bees, my notebook was filled with relatively unambiguous counts of Agapostemon, Bombus, and Melissodes, along with a spatter of entries recorded simply as “little black bee.” I eventually learned that those little black bees represent an extraordinarily diverse assemblage, and that my casual label was lumping numerous species across multiple genera together. Other bees are less generous with traits that allow for such effortless identification. Take the striking green, yellow, and black of bicoloured sweat bees ( Agapostemon virescens), the tremendously fuzzy bodies of bumble bees ( Bombus species), and the long antennae of the aptly named long-horned bees ( Melissodes species) as examples. When it comes to identifying bees on the wing, certain species or genera tend to stand out. The job of VirusBarrier is self-explanatory, but the second is a two-way firewall, a component you don’t often see included with security software at this sort of price. Intego’s Mac Internet Security X9 suite combines VirusBarrier with NetBarrier to create a pair of utilities designed to catch and kill malware threats, and spot potential intrusion attempts from outside as well as outgoing attempts from rogue software. However, some still had to be torn out by the roots yet again by a free copy of Malwarebytes, which make one raise an eyebrow and wonder what else might be missed.VirusBarrier from Intego is well known among Mac users, with the solution being one of the first virus scanners on the Mac. After infecting my Mac with a fair amount of dubious software (including an infamous keystroke logger disguised as an Adobe Flash Player update), the Malware Removal module was able to diagnose and remove most of my malware. Once again, the Updater module located updates to the handy MacTracker utility and GraphicConverter editing program, but missed an update to Google Chrome, which was somewhat worrying. My previous version of this review noted that the Updater module had missed significant updates to Zoom and Mozilla’s Firefox browser, both of which became vital to users during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. While well-intentioned and focused as marketing and selling points, the Updater function seems to only locate a smattering of available application updates, and it’s almost anyone’s guess as to what it will see and what will be glossed over.
